With the sun shining, only a gentle breeze and warm temperatures I spent some time after work at Westbere Lakes where I wandered down to the river and along towards Fordwich a few hundred yards. The plan was to try to get a few images of the Scarce Chasers with the Sigma 150mm macro lens if they would allow a close enough approach and I was not to be disappointed. On arrival I found the first of 6 Scarce Chaser which posed for a few quick shots before flying deeper into cover. Moving on there were hundreds of Damselflies, Variable, Azure, Blue tailed, Red eyed and Large Red Damsefly were all seen along with lots of Banded Demoiselles along the river. There were 8 Hairy Dragonfly with a pair seen mating and after a while I come across a few Scarce chaser which flashed orange as they flew about before returning to rest, often on the same perch. I got into a position and then spent a while firing off a few pleasing efforts with the camera.

Again the results are pretty good and this lens continues to impress. With a 30 minute cycle home I made my way back towards the entrance where all the way back, dragonflies and damselflies were everywhere and it was nice to see my first Broad bodied Chaser of the year, but unfortunately the wrong side of a ditch. I shall return in the next few days where hopefully this place will continue to produce lots of photographic opportunities and maybe in a few weeks, a Norfolk Hawker if we are lucky.
Immature Female Scarce Chaser
Those Scarce Chasers really are cracking Dragons Marc, made more so by your excellent images :-) that head close up made me jump as i scrolled down!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Marc, the Scarce Chaser was fantastic.
ReplyDeleteMore great stuff Marc I shall have to take a trip down there next week maybe.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful shots. They are really stunning, one of my favourite dragon species (and unusually the adult males aren't as pretty as the immatures and adult females, IMHO!)
ReplyDeleteBrilliant mate, yet to see Scarce - I must get get out more!!
