Dainty and Scarce Rewards

After returning from an early morning session at Thursley Common where although I didn't find a Brilliant Emerald emerging, I did find 7 Brilliant Emerald exuviae which was just as good and hopefully an area where the film crew can now film an emergence. With the sun shining and temperatures quite warm, but a brisk wind on the coast, I made a mid afternoon visit to Oare Marshes to see if any Dainty Damselfly and Scarce Emerald Damselfly could be found. The wind really did not help but in a couple of hours I managed to find c30 Dainty Damselfly and 25 Scarce Emerald Damselfly in a small area. I'm very hopeful that with a lighter wind and an earlier visit in the day, that numbers of both species should rise well in the next week or so. I shall try to get back there next week at some point to do another count. Also seen on the visit were 2 Hairy Dragonfly mating, a few Azure, Blue tailed and Variable Damselfly, 1 Ruddy Darter, 1 Black tailed Skimmer and a few Four spotted Chaser.

  1. Brilliant images of two damsels Marc. Sadly for me, I'm not expecting to see either up here in the frozen north any time soon if ever.

    Regards....Pete.

    1. I'm surprised with the wind that they actually look respectable. We've had a few warm days down here the past week. Looks to be cooling down next week though. If ever you found a Dainty up north, there would be a big twitch I reckon. Have a good week. Take care.
