Whilst at Nethergong over the weekend, I spent some time sitting at the stream watching Azure and Variable Damselflies ovipositing into the floating weed. As they were so pre-occupied with continuing the next generation, I was able to lay on my belly and get quite low down and capture some pleasing efforts with the camera. These two species are very similar in appearance and every year at the start of the season, I have to remind myself of the key features. I think the photos show some of these off well.

Occasionally, a number of pairs would be egg laying next to each other and it was quite amusing watching the males all in a row as they stood upright. I later spent a while at sunset trying to capture some photos of the Banded Demoiselles as they roosted on some grass and although it was a little cloudy and not the best evening for trying, I ended up with a few pleasing photos showing some of the evening colours off. Hopefully a few more visits out during the week if the weather allows to see whats about.

Finally getting a few Dragons here now Marc :-) Like those Sunset shots !
ReplyDeleteGood to hear from you Warren again. I've not been out half as much as I would like to have been. Glad you ate at last having a few dragons to look at. Are your Beautiful Dems and White legs out in any numbers yet?
DeleteLove the 2nd image Marc.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks Bob. Nice to see the next generation being made and a few photo opportunities too.
DeleteThe Azure Damselflies are beautiful, thay are superb.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks Bob. Nice to observe and be able to photograph.
DeleteSuper images, Marc, and thanks for the reminder that I should look carefully at all 'Azure' Damselflies just in case! You made me go back and look at some recent Azure images - no such luck.
ReplyDeleteMy own list of dragons for this year is still pathetic, with only WFD, 4-spot, and Hairy (very distant) seen so far. Hopefully that will pick up soon - going to try and catch up with Clubtail (it would be a first for me) on Friday, weather perimitting.
Best wishes - - - - Richard
Many thanks Richard, appreciated. Best of luck with the Clubtail mission if you go. They certainly are a stunning species and well worth the effort to see.
