Nearly Time to Emerge

With April only delivering a few Large Red Damselfly and a single Variable Damselfly emerging from the pond, May has a lot to live up to and with temperatures forecast to rise throughout the week, I think there could be a good emergence this week. I have been keeping an eye on the Hairy Dragonfly nymphs in the pond for the past few days and for the past 2 days and nights, one individual has been resting with her head out of the water and starting the process of breathing from water to air. Some of the markings on the head and side of the thorax are clearly visible through the skin and hopefully this week, she may emerge and I just hope if I keep checking early morning, that I will be able to witness and photograph the emergence, preferably before I have to go to work. Most literature suggests they emerge early morning so I think from tomorrow, I will have to get up early to keep checking. Fingers crossed the weather is on the up from this week and hopefully I can make a few visits out after work to a few locations to see what else is flying and the get the season really under way.

    1. As you say, hard to find in the wild I imagine. Just nice to add some of their secret lifestyle in photos.
