It Must Be The Weekend!

It must be the weekend. Dark clouds, mist and drizzly rain were what greeted me this morning when I arrived at Reculver. Why does it always seem to be that during the week its sunshine and lovely weather for those that can get out. Hopefully my luck will change soon. I started off this morning with a quick drive around the lanes where I noted 1 Barn Owl at Shuart along with 1 Common Buzzard out of roost. I then drove over to Reculver where after parking up and getting the rain coat, gloves and hat on, I walked on down the seawall and inland to Chambers Wall before walking back the way I had come. Birds noted today were 32 Oystercatcher, 1 Kestrel, 5 Meadow Pipit, 2 Mute Swan, 2 Kingfisher, c10 Skylark, 1 Pied Wagtail, 40 Ringed Plover, 8 Redshank, 2 Turnstone, 1 Marsh Harrier, 2 Curlew, 22 Reed Bunting, 18 Mallard, c100 Wigeon and c45 Corn Bunting in the area. Despite the dull conditions, there were a few year ticks in the form of 1 Lapland Bunting (84) which was seen and heard as it flew near Coldharbour, 1 Cetti's Warbler (85) called a few times but went unseen along with 1 Water Rail (86). At Coldharbour, I saw 1 Peregrine (87) and other birds seen included 2 Shelduck, 1 Stonechat, 1 Little Egret, 6 Yellowhammer, 2 Tree Sparrow, 1 Pheasant, c130 Brent Geese and Golden Plover could be heard calling out in the mist somewhere. A miserable morning weather wise but somewhat brightened up by a few year ticks which moves the list on slowly. Maybe another outing in the morning if the weather looks to be a bit better.

  1. Sorry the weather put a damper on your day,it's not been great down here, but your outing did turn up some great birds,Lapland Bunting Cetti's Warbler, and for me,the Icing on the cake, would have been Tree Sparrow.
Plus Barn Owl and Marsh Harrier, better weather tomorrow.
    John.

    1. I did have nice views of the Tree Sparrows, just a shame I was getting soaked at the same time. Maybe tomorrow will be better.

  2. Certainly was a grim old day out there marc! You did get some good species though, virtually all of which I have little or no chance of seeing here! Now get back to work so the sun can return!!!

    1. I does host a good number of species on any day. Just hope the camera can come out of the bag soon.

  3. You'd have had a difficult job finding those birds up in these parts, Marc, even if they had been around. We could barely see to the bottom of the garden (12 metres away) first thing! It's much clearer now, but still dull and misty, and feeling rather damp. I hope you have better weather tomorrow, although your bird count today was impressive, even if it wasn't a photography day.

  4. Fingers crossed for a better day tomorrow although the forecast looks pretty much the same as today, dull, dark and damp.
