It must be the weekend. Dark clouds, mist and drizzly rain were what greeted me this morning when I arrived at Reculver. Why does it always seem to be that during the week its sunshine and lovely weather for those that can get out. Hopefully my luck will change soon. I started off this morning with a quick drive around the lanes where I noted 1 Barn Owl at Shuart along with 1 Common Buzzard out of roost. I then drove over to Reculver where after parking up and getting the rain coat, gloves and hat on, I walked on down the seawall and inland to Chambers Wall before walking back the way I had come. Birds noted today were 32 Oystercatcher, 1 Kestrel, 5 Meadow Pipit, 2 Mute Swan, 2 Kingfisher, c10 Skylark, 1 Pied Wagtail, 40 Ringed Plover, 8 Redshank, 2 Turnstone, 1 Marsh Harrier, 2 Curlew, 22 Reed Bunting, 18 Mallard, c100 Wigeon and c45 Corn Bunting in the area. Despite the dull conditions, there were a few year ticks in the form of 1 Lapland Bunting (84) which was seen and heard as it flew near Coldharbour, 1 Cetti's Warbler (85) called a few times but went unseen along with 1 Water Rail (86). At Coldharbour, I saw 1 Peregrine (87) and other birds seen included 2 Shelduck, 1 Stonechat, 1 Little Egret, 6 Yellowhammer, 2 Tree Sparrow, 1 Pheasant, c130 Brent Geese and Golden Plover could be heard calling out in the mist somewhere. A miserable morning weather wise but somewhat brightened up by a few year ticks which moves the list on slowly. Maybe another outing in the morning if the weather looks to be a bit better.
