Always Looking to Improve!

My last few visits have seen me trying to find a few Migrant Hawkers to capture in flight but despite seeing lots around, I have still not found 'that' individual which ticks all the boxes, hovering well not too far away, nice calm sunny weather, light winds and a nice clean background colour would all be perfect requirements in my book. Whilst I have managed a few flight sessions with other species this year using the Canon 7d mk , I can't help but feel that my results last year using the Canon 50d seem a little better, the exception being the Emperor Dragonfly flight shots I managed this year. Maybe I had more luck, more dragonflies showing well in flight or just more time and patience, I seemed to have struggled to get decent flight shots this year with a number of species. I suppose that's all part of the challenge we put ourselves through, to use this technology to get the best images we can and hopefully learn along the way to improve our techniques. Last year I managed plenty of Migrant Hawker photos and even looking back at them this year, I am still very pleased with them.

I have managed a few this year but if I am honest, most have not really made the grade I would expect to get so I will have to hope I can get a few more sessions in with them and see if I can find a showy individual. A shot from this year attempts is below, not too bad but I think if I can get all the factors working in my favour, I should be able to get some improvements.

Fingers crossed for the weather on Saturday as I have most of the day to myself if I want to. If I can please have lots of sunshine, light winds and showy Migrant Hawkers and Willow Emerald Damselflies, then I will e a happy man with the camera!

  1. Marc,
I've not had a sniff of a chance at photographing hovering Mixta's this year :-( Not really got the best habitat for that. Saturday looks to be settling down weatherwise, so one last hoorah for the dragons ?

    1. Hopefully the weather will be nice and I can have a classic autumnal day out with some dragonfly photography.

  2. Can't see what you grumbling about Marc, I can get peregrines in 100+ stoops but I am blowed if I can get a decent shot of a dragonfly in flight.
