'Dew' an Early Start!

With thick fog last night in east Kent, I decided if it was present this morning to have an early start in the garden and see if I could get any 'dewy' shots of the Large Red Damselflies that emerged yesterday. I searched on the internet for advice and settings to use to maximize my chances and at 6.30am I looked out of the window to see the fog was still as thick as it was the night before. After getting ready I went off into the garden and found the 2 Large Red Damselflies at roost on the vegetation. Even better still was that they were covered in dew, a perfect chance to get a few shots. I used a variety of settings from manual mode with in camera flash which gave a night time feel to the shots as well as AV mode, f8-16, ISO 400 with in camera flash. Some shots were taken hand held but the majority were taken with either a monopod or tripod. I spent about an hour taking a variety of shots from different angles and as far as shots go, I am very pleased with the results. It just goes to show with a bit of patience and experimenting with settings and different angles, that a good pleasing shot can always be taken. As the sun started to come up I left them to dry out and walked the 10 yards back inside for a cuppa and breakfast. Later on in the day when I was out with the family, 2 Large Red Damselflies emerged from the pond with a further 3 looking like they are ready to emerge in the next day or so. If I can get the chance, I will have another go at trying to get that 'perfect' set of emergence shots.

    1. Cheers Warren. They certainly were very tiny. A sight we seldom see. Another reason why I love this type of photography.
