Waxwings Everywhere!

It was only a few weeks ago I was wondering whether I would miss all the Waxwings at Reculver this year as some had been seen there already and I didn't know if the invasion would carry on. Little did I know that Reculver would get its fair share of these Scandinavian delights. I have seen a few in the last few weeks and this morning was no different. I had a quick look at Chambers Wall along the concrete entrance track in the hope of catching the Barn Owl as it quartered the area. It was freezing cold but I soon located the Owl but it was very distant. Eventually it moved off and out of site. I then noticed a tight flock of birds flying around the car park and landing on the tree tops. They were 17 Waxwings so I quickly got in the car and drove into the car park. They were all trilling loudly and feeding on the berries. I got into a nice position and after a few minutes they got their confidence and come down to feed. The sun was only just up but it provided a lovely light on the Waxwings. I took a number of shots and not long after they flew off west towards the railway line. Just before I left, I picked out 2 Bewick's Swans flying south and also in the area were good numbers of Redwings, Blackbirds and Fieldfares. Along the entrance track on the way out I noticed 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Stonechat and 2 Kestrels. Not a bad start to the day!

  3. I've seen a lot of waxwing photos of late, but your shot of the three birds on a branch is by far the best composition I've seen. Well done,
    John
