Up Close with a Large Red Damselfly

With the warmest day of the year so far here in east Kent and with lovely unbroken sunshine for large parts of the day with light winds, I spent some time out in the back garden this afternoon photographing a Large Red Damselfly which spent most of its time resting on the rocks around the pond. I was able to lay down on the grass on my belly and with the use of a bean bag to rest the camera on, fired off a number of shots with some turning out quite nicely. I could have really done with a 100mm macro at this range but the trusty Sigma 150mm delivered some pleasing efforts. A look in the pond revealed a few nymphs in the shallows still and 2 Hairy Dragonfly nymphs could be seen monitoring the masses of tadpoles which I suspect are taken from time to time. Weather permitting, a few more will emerge soon and hopefully I can build up a photographic library of the different species as they emerge throughout the year.
