Not me before you get overly excited! With the sun shining well today but quite a strong wind, I decided on my way home from work as its on the way to call into East Blean Wood, home of the rare Heath Fritillary. Sometimes I can get complacent that I have such a rare butterfly about 5 minutes from home and people travel hundreds of miles from around the country to see this delicate Fritillary, so I have to make a few visits each year to realise how lucky I am. I spent a few hours here at the weekend where I saw a good number of Heath Fritillary in the clearings near the car park and it was also nice to see other enthusiasts enjoying the butterfly in the sun. I didn't stay long tonight, in fact about 15 minutes where I didn't even leave the car park. The evening sun catches a small area in the corner of the car park and I found a couple of Heath Fritillary here. I took a few shots including a nice shot of the underwing with the wings open. I have tried to get this image a number of times before and despite all the planning, it has never come together that well. As coincidences go, it couldn't have been better tonight, a nice clean background, a nice pose with wings open and the sun shining, perfect. It would seem rude not to call in again during the week, weather permitting for a few more photo opportunities of these lovely rare butterflies.
