I Like it When a Plan Comes Together!

I received a text from Matt Hindle this afternoon alerting me that he was watching a Ruff at Coldharbour on the flooded fields. This can be a tricky bird to get on the Reculver list and indeed I did not see one at all in 2012. With this in mind I made a brief trip over after work and soon arrived on site. The flooded field just south of Coldharbour lagoon had indeed attracted a large gathering of waders which included 14 Ringed Plover, c120 Dunlin, c140 Golden Plover, c100 Lapwing, c60 Redshank, c10 Turnstone and scoping through the birds revealed the hoped for Ruff (80). Although the camera was on my back it was far too dark for any attempt at a photo but it may hang around for a few days hopefully and with the cold weather seemingly getting colder I wander what else will arrive in the area. With the Ruff in the notebook I made my way home calling in at a site near the old Roman Galley pub in the hope some Woodcock would be seen. I keep missing them so far this year but tucked up warm in the car with the heater on as it got dark 4 Woodcock (81) flew out of the woody area almost together with one turning back and flying nicely over the car giving a nice silhouette of the species. Typical, you miss them every session and then a flock appears. A nice sight to end the day.

  1. Cor what a wader fest, a dozen Lapwing with a Golden Plover is the best it gets here for Waders,:-)
