Waxing in the Rain!

I was unsure where to go this morning, Reculver to try to re-find the Black Brant, Oare Marshes to see Whooper Swans or Grove Ferry for hopefully more Waxwings. Knowing that it may be a good few years until I am treated to Waxwings locally in good numbers and plenty of photo opportunities I decided to visit Grove Ferry. The only problem was the weather, wind and rain were causing problems early on and they did throughout the morning but on a few occasions the sun did pop out briefly, very briefly. I arrived at Grove Ferry at 7am where I wandered up to the ramp. Fieldfare and Redwing were flying out of the paddock and at the ramp I noted c250 Cormorant flying out of the reserve, c400 Teal, 12 Marsh Harrier passed out of the reserve, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 6 Waxwing flying east calling, 1 Bearded Tit, 3 Tufted Duck, 2 Bewick's Swans appeared high over the back pool before after a circuit of Grove flew off east. I was joined by Sue Morton where after more heavy showers we took shelter in the Feast hide. Not much here except 2 more Marsh Harrier and 1 Water Rail. As the rain stopped briefly we made our way back to the car adding 1 Green Woodpecker and we then decided to pay a visit to Lakeside Business Park to see if the Waxwings were around. I arrived a few minutes later and was soon watching 24 Waxwing. With the showers quite frequent I decided to park up for the next hour or so and just watch these beauties at work. When the odd bit of sun appeared I managed a few shots but nowhere as good as the other day. Maybe another visit tomorrow just in case the sun does shine again.

  1. Another Waxwing, so necessary to get as many, because, they won't be here for long. And, they are beautiful.

  2. Hi Marc,
Still nice images, especially so in the tough conditions :-) Looks like tomorrow might be a little brighter. The pressures of Xmas shopping are taking their toll on the camera time too now, not enough daylight hours left in the day! LoL
