Insects save the Day.....Again!

I awoke this morning at 5am and lay in bed wandering whether to go to Stodmarsh or Reculver. In the end I thought as I had good views yesterday of the Great White Egrets I should go to Reculver and find a few migrants. After getting ready I left for Reculver in the dark and had a brief drive around looking for a few Owls in the growing light. No luck with this so I drove over to Reculver and parked up. I walked on down to Coldharbour meeting Mike on the way before we walked inland to Chambers Wall. Mike continued along the embankment and I walked to Chambers Wall car park before returning back the way I had come checking all the likely looking bushes. Again it was pretty quiet with not a lot to see but it was at least sunny. Birds noted were 2 Little Egret, 7 Chiffchaff, 10 Cormorant, 12 Oystercatcher, 10 Pied Wagtail, 2 Grey Heron, 1 Common Sandpiper, 23 Ringed Plover, 15 Turnstone, c100 Linnet, 17 Redshank, 15 Meadow Pipit and a good showing of c15 Red Admiral feeding in the sunshine allowing me the excuse to get the camera into action. There were 5 Wheatear, 1 Kestrel, 1 Grey Wagtail, 2 Dunlin, c25 Mallard, 2 Mute Swan, 2 Reed Bunting, 7 Long tailed Tit, 2 Whitethroat, 2 Marsh Harrier, 2 Sand Martin, 1 Willow Warbler, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 1 Reed Warbler, 1 Blackcap, 3 Swallow, 1 Bar tailed Godwit and c80 House Martin flying and landing on the towers. With the temperature rising I then moved on to Brook where I spent 45 minutes looking for dragonflies. I had not been looking long when I found 1 Willow Emerald Damselfly and spent most of the time photographing these lovely little creature. Other bits here were 8 Migrant Hawker, 5 Common Darter and a few Common Blue Damselfly. Still no sign of a Wryneck for me but a pleasant morning to be out with the camera.

  1. c.100 Linnet sounds like a good count to me in relation to the kind of figures in my area of Lancashire.

Another interesting account with excellent images Marc.

    Kind Regards from Lanc's.

  3. Hi Marc,
Not quite the migrant fest we anticipated out there this morning was it :-) Still Autumn aint over yet!

Nice insect photo's, did you use the extension tube, I'm going to put one on my xmas list, and wondered if an 'f stop' is lost when fitted, as in the 1.4 converters ?
