When out on Sunday, I was talking to an 'expert' who told me, or so I understood, that the 'white string' was the remnants of the old digestive tract that was discarded. It's interesting to find that it's part of the old 'breathing apparatus' makes sense now! <br /><br />Your theory seems to hold water. It all goes to show how much there is to learn out there.
