Challenging Times ahead!

As most dragonfly enthusiasts will know, capturing a dragonfly in flight is always a challenge but with a bit of knowledge on the species, camera settings, a willing subject and most importantly, patience and taking a good number of shots, it is normally possible to get a few usable shots. I have had some luck with photographing a few species in flight but one species I look forward to photographing each year in flight is the Migrant Hawker. After they have matured up and move onto territory, they can often be a good subject to photograph as they often hover for some period of time allowing you to get on to them and fire off a few shots before they move off. They do however often come back a number of times to the same area given you time to get some more shots. Last year I managed a few sessions where I found a few males which showed well and I was able to get a number of pleasing images of this nicely coloured dragonfly. The question is, will I be able to get anything near to the quality I managed last year? I hope with a bit of luck and nice weather and a confiding subject, I will be able to give it a good go.

  1. Superb - not sure how you could improve on these magnificent images! I love the drama of the head-on shot.

    1. Thanks Wilma. Like you, i'm not sure if they can be improved upon but hopefully it will be fun or probably frustrating to try.

  3. I think you'll have a hard time improving on these shots Marc, but I know you'll try anyway! Fantastic images mate, takes a lot of effort to get quality like that.

    1. Thanks Warren. I must have taken a few hundred shots for these rewards but looking back at them, worth every minute.
