My First Butterflies of the Year

With a week of settled mild sunny weather, its been very frustrating at work knowing that spring has finally sprung. I managed a very brief 10 minute visit after work to Reculver on Wednesday where I wanted to see if any butterflies were on the wing. Iv'e still not seen one yet so I was hopeful that in a few sunny areas I might get lucky. The temperature was dropping quickly but a quick search revealed my first 2 Small Tortoiseshell butterflies of the year but unfortunately I had no camera on me, unforgivable! With another sunny afternoon today I was out of work sharp at 3.45pm where once again I drove over to Reculver in the hope of a butterfly for the camera. A look inland revealed no butterflies but I did see 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Little Grebe, 1 Great crested Grebe, 10 Tufted Duck, 2 Mistle Thrush. I moved on to the back of the caravan park where I was able to locate 2 Small Tortoiseshell and this time with the camera in hand, I was able to grab a few shots before they flew off at speed. The weather looks quite nice over the weekend and maybe a migrant will arrive with a bit of luck or a few more butterflies will be on the wing.

  3. When you live in the wilds of Cumbria like myself, its just amazing to see that. it wouldn' t have a chance up here, there has been a strong North wind blowing.
    All the best, Gordon.
